Whether working to a customer's brief or for myself, the design process is essentially the same. A lot of time is spent initially just thinking about my subject matter and exactly what it is I am trying to say with the piece and how best this can be achieved. It can involve taking trips to take photographs and undertaking historical research. Once ready to design, the use of sketches, models, drawings and occasionally digital enhancement or alteration will assist in the decision about the piece. Even at that stage, the design may be subject to alteration if any elements do not work in practice.
The following images are some of the research and development relating to my latest installation.
